Teens serve as the jury, as well as prosecuting and defense attorneys during each hearing. Local judges and attorneys, all of whom volunteer their time, preside over the court proceedings and mentor the youth. It is not the responsibility of Teen Court to determine innocence or guilt of a defendant, but rather to hold the offenders accountable for their actions by imposing sentences of community service hours, jury terms and life skills classes. To ensure fair sentences, the jury utilizes a sentencing grid that specifies consequences of gradual severity corresponding to the offense. Admission of guilt is a pre-requisite to be eligible for Teen Court by all defendants. Teen Court participation is an alternative sentencing program that is strictly voluntary; once the defendant enters Teen Court, the process must be completed successfully by the defendant or the case is returned to the referring agency, in which case, the defendant receives any deferment pending on their case from that referring agency. All referrals come from Municipal Court, Magistrate Court, Juvenile Probation Office, and Carlsbad Municipal School District. |

Our Lodging Program sustains families and keeps them close to their ill children, which has significant long-term positive outcomes as they access the healthcare their children need. If our doors were not open, families would be faced with emotional stresses including exhaustion and uncertainty of how to handle the next steps. Staying at a hotel is not financially possible for most, and also causes families to feel isolated while navigating medical care on their own. Funding from United Way of Carlsbad and South Eddy County supports our on-going expenses associated with lodging and assists RMHC-NM in transforming the lives of the children and families who desperately need lodging, support and access to resources during their medical crisis. |
